Client & Overview: Math Club is a very highly regarded publishing company right here in Los Angeles, specializing in composing and commercial music placement in Film & TV. They’ve worked with companies ranging from AT&T and the NFL and seen placements in Lego Batman, Friends From College and even Dancing with the Stars - and that’s just to name a few. I had the honor of being contacted to create the album cover and brochure for a mixtape aimed at other music supervisors looking for authentic, high-quality, sample-free 90’s hip hop.

Objective: “Math Club Presents… First Period History” - The main objective was for me to get the album cover to reflect the same authenticity and “Old School” vibe as the tracks on the mixtape. We landed on taking inspiration from the vintage Pee-Chee folder. The idea was to have faded doodles and scribbles on the folder from the perspective of a high school kid bored in history class. This project pushed me out of my comfort zone with the distinct Pee-Chee illustration style for the characters and the old-school graffiti style lettering, but after some intense research and even some feedback from one of the rappers on the mixtape, we came to a final product we were proud to show off.

Results: After releasing the “First Period History”  mixtape, it was met with enthusiastic interest. So much so, that they were funded to put on a presentation for nearly all music supervisors in the area. I was contacted again to create a brochure that was an extension of the album cover. This included an itinerary for the event, a description of two of the rappers that attended, and a tracklist on the back. The presentation was a huge success as well, and they’ve already landed one of the songs from the playlist in the Netflix Original, Friends From College.

After the success of First Period History, I was brought on to create Second and Third Period History album covers and posters.

Role: I was the sole designer and illustrator for the project from start to finish.

A made up beer for a made up brewery. As part of a class project, I created a packaging label and two ads for "The Super Secret Mystery Hole" IPA.
